National Key Disciplines of Signal and Information Processing 

 

As one of the earliest professional disciplines in radio engineering, signal and information processing first set up the doctoral program in 1981 and the postdoctoral research station in 1986, and it was approved as the first batch of the national key disciplines in 1988 as well as the national key disciplines of signal and information processing in 2002. The founders of this discipline are Prof. He Zhenya (late famous expert on signal expert, the lifetime Fellow of IEEE and the chief scientist of the National Major Project “Eighth-Five” Climbing up Plan) and Prof. Lu Jiren (member of discipline appraisal group in state council and the famous expert in underwater acoustical signal processing). With a profound history and distinguished reputation, this discipline has seen the rapid growth of many excellent talents and people in science and technology as well as in education, making SEU one of the Talent Cultivation Bases influential in the field of signal process in China. At the same time, it is dedicated to doing the research and application of frontier information as well as science and technology, making outstanding achievements in national economic construction and national defense construction.

There is the Key Laboratory of Underwater Acoustical Signal Processing (B) attached to the Ministry of Education, Teaching and Research Office for Digital Signal Processing, Information Access Technology Center, Multimedia Technology Research Institute, and Jiangsu Digital Engineering Center, etc. The current dean is Prof. Wang Qiao and there are 38 lecturers, including 13 professors and 15 associate professors.
 
The major research direction includes: 1) basic theory study on signal and information processing; 2) marine information engineering; 3) underwater communication; 4) the theories and technology of radio communication and networks; 5) affective computing and the intelligent information processing oriented toward image and voice; 6) multimedia encoding & transmission and image/video and voice analysis, etc.; 7) complex network and the social network
 
Our school has undertaken and completed over ten national and ministerial scientific research projects in the past decade, which includes National Key Project of Climbing up Plan, National High Technology Research and Development Program of China (863), National Defense Project 863, Project 973, National Natural Science Foundation, Assembly Pre-research Project, and engineering projects, etc. A series of achievements have been made in theories and applications, such as the multi-base and multi-repeater cooperative processing in New Cooperative Wireless Communication Network, distributed radio resource management and multi-user scheduling, research on the basic theory of data compressing, research on high-speed digital processing and transmission, signal processing for network, multimedia signal processing and underwater target classification, etc. Hundreds of papers and theses have been published in many first class academic journals at home and abroad, tens of national invention patents have been applied and granted and over 20 professional books have been published.
 
In recent years, the scientific research has been mainly involved in communication signal processing, network information processing, underwater acoustic processing and target identification as well as intelligent information processing, etc. At present, the school has undertaken over 10 projects, such as National 973/863 Program (973: The National Basic Research Program; 863: The National High Technology Research and Development Program of China), The National Natural Science Foundation of China, major National Science and Technology Programs, Key programs for National Defense Pre-research and Key Projects for Enterprises. Great achievements have been made: 7 provincial science and technology awards in related fields have been received; hundreds of papers and theses have been published in many famous peer-reviewed international journals, such as IEEE Transactions on Information Theory, Transactions on Signal Processing, Transactions on Communications, Transactions on Wireless Communications and Transactions on Circuits and Systems; hundreds of patents have been granted and accepted; many technologies have been through the industrial applications.
 
Three directions of research, i.e. underwater acoustic target detection and identification technology, underwater acoustic signal transmission and multi-sensor information integration, have yielded a series of distinctive fruits. In recent four years, the school has undertaken over 30 research programs with ¥42 million in total contract value, such as 2 secondary subjects of “National Defense 973”, 3 programs from the National Nature Foundation Program, 3 from Sea Equipment Pre-research Program and 3 from Engineering Projects, etc.
 
 
Great progress has been made in a series of key technologies, such as the standardization of the multi-user MIMO, super speed and short-distance wireless access technology, relay coordination and multi-point cooperation. More than 20 papers on related research achievements have been published in many peer-reviewed international journals, such as IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing, Transactions on Communications and Transactions on Wireless Communications, which have been cited by peers at home and abroad for hundreds of times; over 30 international and national patents have been granted and accepted, 4 of which have been adopted by IEEE 802.11ac and IEEE 802.16m. The school has formed its own characteristics on the research direction of digital and radio communications, received the grants of many patents and put into actual application. These researches have also been awarded the 3rd prize of “Army Science and Technology Progress”.
 
Continuous progress has been made in the field of multimedia information processing, affecting computing and the emotion recognition of children (2nd prize of “Jiangsu Science and Technology Progress Award” and the 2nd prize of “Natural Science Award of the Ministry of Education”). A series of scientific research projects have been completed and the practical technologies have been developed involving the intelligent video information processing in terms of the analysis of intelligent transportation real-time scene, the analysis of real-time expression and the data mining of social network, etc. Many papers about the research on complex network have been published on international journals. At present, all together over 30 national invention patents have been granted in this field.

The school has conducted much market cooperation with the enterprises in and out of Jiangsu Province in the field of transferring the scientific and technological achievements. The products of fusion communication station and the high speed digital phosphor oscilloscope have been recognized by many enterprises and put into market, among which over 40 patents of them have been granted.
 
  
Talent Training

 

In terms of talent training, this discipline, with the provincial brand professional title of “the Electronics and Information Engineering Profession in Southeast University”, is on the way to build the national “the first class special major of Electronics and Information Engineering” and has formed a national teaching team led by Prof. Wu Zhenyang. In terms of cooperation of industry-university-research, this discipline has set up a batch of associated laboratories in collaboration with the world famous ICT enterprise: the DSP associated laboratory with Texas Instruments, the FPGA associated laboratories with Xilinx and the associated laboratories of intelligent transportation technology with the Canadian QnX and the Texas Instruments. The school has cultivated hundreds of doctors and masters, which won it the “Best Doctor’s Thesis of Academic Degree Commission of the State Council” in 2000, got nominated for the “Best Doctor’s Thesis” in 2003 and 2007 and 5 theses of them have been awarded as the “Best Doctor’s Thesis in Jiangsu Province”. The underwater acoustic major has cultivated thousands of professionals for the national defense in recent 50 years.
