The national key laboratory of mobile communications, established in 1990, is the open laboratory built on the basis of key disciplines of Communications & Electronic System of Southeast University by State Education Commission and State Development and Planning Commission, which was accepted for the first time in 1995. After over 20 years’ construction and development, great achievements have made in the laboratory in terms of the infrastructure construction, scientific research and talent cultivation, making it the key and influential laboratory at home and abroad.

At present, there are 45 researchers, among which there are 2 the distinguished professors of the Ministry of Education, 12 doctoral supervisors, 18 professors and 12 associate professors in the laboratory. Prof. You Xiaohu, dean of the laboratory and the expert of National “863” Communication Theme, works as the leader of the 3rd Generation Mobile Communication Research Project General Group and the main academic leader. The laboratory serves as the training center for the postgraduates and doctors majoring in Communications and Information System as well as the scientific research station for the post doctors. At present, there are over 180 doctors and postgraduates studying and researching here. In addition, around 16 post-doctors, visiting scholars and visiting research fellows come to work in the laboratory every year. Therefore, the laboratory issues the “Open Projects Guide” to welcome the scholars everywhere to undertake the research of the projects.

In recent five years, the laboratory undertakes altogether 63 scientific research projects, such as the National “863” Project, the projects from National Natural Science Foundation and the projects from the International Cooperation. As a result, the laboratory won the 2nd and 3rd prizes of National Science and Technology Award, and at the same time, great breakthroughs have been made in the priority project of the National “863” and “Ninth-Five” Plan---the 3rd Generation Mobile Communication System. The accepted three projects from the National Nature Science Foundation are all rated as top or excellent. To be specific, the achievements are quite fruitful, including the 2nd prize of National Science and Technology Award in 2003, five 1st prizes at the provincial and ministerial level between 2004 and 2007, around 43 published papers in recent 5 years, 4 monographs, over 50 papers in IEEE Transactions, 94 searched papers in SCI and EI and over 30 applied national invention patents. Papers have been published in the most internationally influential IEEE for 11 years in a row, ranking top in the number of the papers in China.

The laboratory has conducted a long-term research in CDMA & Spread Spectrum Communication, Modern Signal Processing & its Application in Mobile Communication as well as the Mobile Communication Network and System Theory and Application, which helps to form its own research and development advantages and features in independently conducting the theoretical research, system simulation, algorithm optimization, design of software and hardware and adjustment as well as the field test. “3rd Generation Mobile Communication System Research and Development”, the key project of the National “863” Plan led by the laboratory, has its first field experiment. The laboratory has grasped many core and innovative technologies in the world, which suggests that China has become one of the few countries grasping the key technology of the 3rd Generation Mobile Communication System, offering a strong support for the Chinese manufacturers to produce CDMA Mobile Communication devices. In 2005, it has develops the first special chip of the wireless phone---WCDMA---in China, which wins the wide acclaims among the experts at home and abroad.
