Academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering

Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering: Professor Sun Zhongliang

Professor Sun Zhongliang, doctoral supervisor with Southeast University, was born in Shanghai in August 26th, 1936, with Yin County, Zhejiang Province as his native place. After graduating from the Department of Radio Engineering of Nanjing College of Engineering (today’s Southeast University) in 1960, he has been teaching and conducting research in SEU. Since 1993, he has been director of the National Millimeter Waves (MMW) Laboratory and principal of the discipline of electromagnetic field theory and microwave technology; in addition, he was elected member of the 8th, 9th and 10th national committee of CPPCC successively. He was elected academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering in November, 2001.

Professor Sun Zhongliang has been conducting research in and cultivating talents for the field of MMW technology. In order to develop the resources of MMW frequency spectrum, Professor Sun has invested a lot of effort in such research subjects as the occurring and amplification of MMW signals, their frequency transformation, power synthesis and phase locking, components for quasi-optics, MMW modules, and integration front-end. He has accomplished plenty of influential achievements, including such major research project as MMW bulk-effect oscillator series. The working principle of the bulk-effect harmonic-pattern oscillator he proposed has been widely accepted and promoted in the academia both internationally and domestically. The integrated oscillators of the dielectric resonator fundamental wave frequency stabilization and harmonic output, the 3-millimeter harmonic power synthesis circuits, and the injection locking of MMW sub-harmonic, among others, have proved to be key breakthroughs in the electromagnetic theory of 8-millimeter mixed integration front-end as well as in circuit design and structure design. In recent years, Professor Sun has been engaged in the research on new technology conceding MMW, like quasi-optics technology and imaging techniques. His work mentioned above has helped solved a series of difficulties in the field of MMW, thus contributing enormously to the application of MMW technology in China.

Professor Sun Zhongliang, down-to-earth in work and rigorous in study, has been placing great emphasis on the integration of theoretical research with engineering practice, and attaching importance to innovation and exploration. Up to now, he has ever won the 1st prize of national scientific and technological progress, as well as the 1st or 2nd prizes of provincial or ministerial-level scientific and technological progress for altogether six times. In addition, he has obtained the “badge for devotion to national defense scientific undertakings”, and has been awarded as the “national young and milled-aged experts with outstanding contributions”, the “university advanced worker in science and technology of China”, the “national model worker in the educational system”, and the “people’s teacher”, etc.
