Sub-Discipline Number: 080904   Sub-Discipline Name: Electromagnetic Field and Microwave Technology)
Electromagnetic Field and Microwave Technology is among the first national key disciplines approved by the Ministry of Education, the first ones to be authorized to confer PhD degrees and set up the center for post-doctoral research in 1996. The National Millimeter Waves Laboratory, approved by the State Development Planning Commission and State Education Commission in 1991, was completed and officially opened in 1993. Professor Sun Zhongliang, preeminent expert on millimeter (MMW) and academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and “Cheung Kong Scholar” Chair Professor Hong Wei act as director of the discipline successively. Now the discipline boasts a faculty of 43 teachers, including 9 doctoral supervisors and 22 with high-grade professional titles; in addition, it has presently 65 PhD candidates, 130 masters’ degree candidate and 2 post-doctors.

Targeted at exploring the spectrum resources of microwave and MMW and focusing on fundamental theories and technologies, the discipline boasts obvious advantages in research on the application system of microwave and MMW, computational electromagnetics, new microwave and MMW technologies and so on supported by applications of such systems as communication, radar, guidance and remote sensing. In the recent decade, the discipline has assumed over 60 national research projects, won more than 10 awards for scientific and technological progress at provincial and ministerial levels, and published multiple monographs as well as over 1,000 papers in international and domestic journals, including more than 250 papers indexed by SCI and EI, etc.. In addition, it has produced an array of outstanding masters and doctors who take up education, research and engineering development and applications in the field, thus contributing remarkably to the development of China’s microwave and MMW research as well as its modernization drive.
1. Objectives
To cultivate academic and technical backbones in the area of electromagnetic field and microwave technology who are armed with good morality, a solid knowledge of fundamental theories and professional expertise, and capable of independent research and innovations.
2. Research Orientation
1)Computational electromagnetics and applied electromagnetics; 2) theory and technology concerning microwaves, MMW and sub-millimeter and their applications; 3) radio frequency technology in wireless communication; 4) interaction between electromagnetic waves and matter.
